Physical Demands on Nursing: Situation Critical
A 2003 study found that the physical demands of nursing contributed to musculoskeletal disorders in the neck and shoulders, pointing to “awkward positions” as the biggest culprit. “With the integration of technology, nurses are trying to navigate around a computer screen while connecting with patients on a personal level,” says David Trippany, a senior researcher with Steelcase. “They’re craning their necks or twisting awkwardly on a stool to make it happen—and doing so multiple times a day. It’s simple movements like these, again and again, that are likely to cause cumulative trauma.”
